Fired because of ex-boyfriend. What should I do?
Dear John,
I was fired from my last job because my now ex-boyfriend showed up there twice making false accusations and acting threatning and hostile. I am recieving unemployment benefits and looking for a new job. I worked there for 4 yrs and recieved quite a few raises and i believe I was a good employee.
My question is do I have to reveal that I was fired? I heard that all my previous employers are allowed to say is whether or not they would rehire me, is this true? What is your advice about this situation?
thanks,
Kathy
Kathy,
When I am conducting employment references, I always ask whether the person is rehirable and whether they left voluntarily or involuntarily. I also ask each candidate I interview why they left certain positions. If someone asks you point-blank: "Why did you leave your position?" You need to be ready with an answer.
If I were you, I would tell the truth, but spin it in such a way that you are a victim of circumstances outside your control, and the situation is resolved (you dumped your boyfriend), so there should be no repeat problems. Be sure to close with the fact that you had received several commendations and promtions for great performance, and you have taken steps to eliminate this issue from your life.
In an employment interview, your future boss is concerned about a repeat performance. Make sure he/she understands THERE WILL NOT BE ONE. This approach allows you to have some control over the INTERPRETATION of the negative reference that is sure to be presented.
Good luck,
John
